Tools for Employers: Hiring Refugees, Asylees & Other Immigrants
In this tight labor market, we know employers need good and dependable employees. A great source of potential workers are authorized non-citizens and people with refugee status. They are eligible to work immediately and can be dependable and hardworking employees.
The Chamber is partnering with the Immigrant and Employee Rights Office (IER) of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to offer this community presentation.
Join us at the Chamber office from 8:30 - 10 a.m. on September 12 for a presentation with helpful tips for hiring and on-boarding refugees and immigrants.
This event will provide support for employers and human resource employees in navigating - the sometimes confusing arena of - work authorization documents for non-citizens. Attendees will receive the chance to ask questions and receive guidance in avoiding unintentional workforce discrimination situations. Employers, human resource and workforce center employees, and others who help non-citizens find employment will especially benefit from this presentation.
In this presentation you will learn about:
- Avoiding discrimination in the Form I-9 and E-Verify processes
- Employer best practices to avoid discriminatory pitfalls in hiring, firing & recruiting
- Employer obligations under the law, drawing on employer case studies
- Refugee & immigrant employment eligibility documentation & authorization, including EAD expiration
- Resources available for questions & technical assistance
Presenter: IER Attorney, Jasmin Lott, Immigrant and Employee Rights Section (IER) Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice. Access their free hotline for employers to obtain technical assistance about best practices for complying with the law 1-800-255-8155.
