Job Description
The Department of Events and Catering, Culinary Services, for the College of Saint Benedict invites applications for a full time, benefit eligible position of Catering Manager.  Under the direction of the Associate Director of Events and Catering, the primary functions of this position are: a.) Provide onsite coordination and direction for catering, concessions and event functions b.) Staff hiring and development c.) Daily department operations and work procedures d.) Budgetary.  This position will work varied hours and days including evening and weekend hour with regular hours between 8:00 am-4:30 pm.  Schedule will adjust based on event needs.

The College of Saint Benedict (CSB), a liberal arts college for women, and Saint John's University (SJU), a liberal arts college for men with a co-educational graduate School of Theology·Seminary, are located six miles apart in central Minnesota, just outside the city of St. Cloud and 70 miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Provide onsite coordination and direction for catering, concessions and event functions
  • Serve as a manager on duty for assigned events, overseeing execution of all catering and event details and troubleshooting as needed
  • Direct, monitor and assist Events and Catering staff to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction
  • Plan events as directed
Staff hiring and development
  • Coach, mentor and hire professional staff, student employees and on-call servers and bartenders
  • Conduct appraisals, review job descriptions, adhere to policies and procedures of the institution and the CSB handbook
  • Schedule and adjust staff levels determined by the business model
  • Provide staff training to ensure implementation of safety, service standards and licensing requirements are met and ensure training is completed by deadlines
  • Plan and execute departmental meetings

Daily department operations and work procedures 
  • Review and develop work procedures and evaluate staffing models to ensure  efficient operation
  • Execute weekly service order meetings to review catering event needs
  • Ensures catering invoices are accurate and processed within two days of event
  • Maintains catering and concessions equipment and accesses need for repair or replacement
  • Work closely with campus groups and departments supporting the mission of CSB/SJU
  • Maintain high levels of customer service
  • Campus and community involvement representing the department
  • Develops catering guide and specialized menus in conjunction with the Chef Manager and Catering Chef, using a standard food and labor cost model
  • Work with Associate Director of Events and Catering in review and planning of annual budget
  • Monitor variances to budget and react in adverse trends
  • Purchase and maintain inventories of alcohol, catering supplies and concession items to appropriate par levels following monthly standards

  • Bachelor's degree or the completion of a Hospitality, Catering or Restaurant Management program or experience in a high level catering service environment is required, experience working with alcohol is preferred.
  • Supervisory or management experience is required, 2 years preferred.
  • Experience with scheduling, training, and coordinating full-time and part-time staff is preferred.
  • ServSafe Certification is preferred.  Successful candidates will be required to complete within six month of hire.
  • Alcohol Training Certification is preferred.  Successful candidates will be required to complete within six month of hire.
  • Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service, leadership and problem solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills are required including oral, written, and interpersonal skills to maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrate time management and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. with our without assistance.
  • Ability to tolerate noise levels, temperature fluctuations and ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to interact with the community of the College of St. Benedict as an integral part of the staff.
  • Project a positive image on behalf of the department and the College of Saint Benedict.
  • Ability to acquire an understanding of the character and mission of the College of St. Benedict and the Culinary Commitment to Excellence.
  • A willingness to maintain a high level of competence. Discreet judgment and confidentiality are expected at this level of responsibility
