Waite Park Referendum
Waite Park has two questions on the ballot for Nov. 8th regarding a proposed ½ percent sales tax. One would approve collecting up to $20 million for a new public safety facility, the other would collect up to $7.5 million for regional trail connections.Â
- Given the city of Waite Park's daytime population of over 30,000 with visitors and workers, public safety demands are much higher than a typical city of our size. Public Safety is a regional safety service for Waite Park and 80% of those arrested come from outside the community.
- Plans for trail connection improvements have been in place for 10 years and would connect multiple trails and parks, ultimately allowing a connection from Willmar all the way to Duluth via bike trail. Â
Sales tax is a user tax. 80% of the sales tax collected in Waite Park is generated by those that live outside the community. Unless approved, the likeliest alternatives would include increases in property taxes. Click here for more information on this special question.
